Governor Bev Perdue is already working on her budget proposal for the coming fiscal year. She says the shortfall is expected to be about $1 billion, or a little more than five percent. It's a sizable gap, but Perdue says it's workable--especially compared to last year's $4 billion dollar shortfall. She says the gap is already half-covered by money she held back from state agencies this year. More

 

The Story

Last week, Dick Gordon talked with Courtney Cook about her essay, "How to Leave a Soldier." Courtney and her husband John decided, through letters, to end their marriage while John was deployed in Iraq. A lot of listeners wrote in about Courtney. Yvonne L'Abbe's letter stood out. She wrote that her husband had also left the military to be at home with her. And he also chose to go back to war, to Afghanistan. Yet their story has an entirely different ending. More

The State of Things

There are more than 40,000 prisoners inside North Carolina’s correctional facilities. Every year close to half of them are released into probation or parole. And while the infrastructure of incarceration is long standing and sturdy, the systems for ensuring a successful transition from prison to citizen are relatively new and arguably unsupported. More
